I. Organization
A. Regular Board Meetings

1.

Meeting are held twice montly on the fist and third Wednesdays at 8:00a.m

B. Annual Meeting

1.

Annual Meeting is usually held in the second week of September.

C. Board Retreat

1. The Board will have a planning meeting after the Annual meeting to discuss ideas presented and develop short and long term goals.

II. Business Recruitment and Retention


1.

Use online and other marketing capabilities to attract new businesses and new types of businesses to Fortuna. Use FBID website for attracting and informing businesses which are relocating, growing or starting.

2.

Use online database to track businesses interested in relocating, starting up or expanding.

3.

Continue to be first point of contact for businesses opening or moving to Fortuna. Provide information on available commercial space, resources, and local, state and other regulations.

4.

Track available commercial property and businesses seeking commercial space. Use online database to make available property available to public.

5.

Continue to advocate for bringing redundant high-speed telecommunications access to Fortuna.

6.

Continue to provide educational opportunities (see Seminars) and programs (see Programs) for existing Fortuna businesses that will improve their competitiveness.

III. Advertising and Public Relations
A. Public Relations

The FBID office is the “Public Relations Agency” for the business community of Fortuna. In this role the office communicates with local, regional and national media for the following:

B. Advertising

1.

Continue the “Fortuna Stories” TV Ad campaign started in February 2006. Add three or more commercials over Summer 2007 Re-evaluate series in Fall 2007.

Advertise citywide retail/service events as needed. (i.e. Customer Appreciation Day or replacement promotion)
Assist Festivals and Events in their advertising campaigns.
Advertise other FBID promotions (i.e. gift certificate, Holiday Movies, business seminars etc).

 

C. Newsletter-Mailings

1.

Produce 6 annual newsletters and/or other mailed publications, mailing to all licensed businesses in Fortuna.

Use newsletters and other mailings to inform Fortuna businesses of FBID activities & plans and ask business owners’ opinions on issues related to projects and budgeting.

Begin making electronic form of newsletter available to businesses that opt for one.

 

IV. Events and Promotions
A. Fortuna Rodeo Week- July 16-22, 2007

1.

Aid Rodeo Board PR/Advertising Chair (Don Brown) in organizing and releasing Rodeo public relations and setting media events. Increase visibility of Fortuna’s business community as part of the Rodeo Week activities.

2.

Aid Rodeo Board and business groups in advertising for Rodeo Week events. Develop packages with local media to increase business visibility during Rodeo Week

B. AutoXpo - July 27-29, 2007

Aid as requested by AutoXpo Committee

C. Hops in Humboldt – August 25, 2007

1.

Work with co-sponsors Epsilon Sigma Alpha and Fortuna Rotary Club in producing beer tasting and music festival.

Work with sponsoring groups on logistics of event, advertising and public relations.

Assist event committee as they transfer to dedicated non-profit formed to run the event and away from two founding organizations.esses.

D. Civil War Days – August 25-26, 2007

1.

Assist local chapter of Marine Corps League in their first hosting Civil War Days event.

E. Apple Harvest Festival - October 6, 2007

1.

Coordinate festival with other organizing groups (Chamber, Downtown, Redwood Village, Parks and Rec, Clendenen’s).

Coordinate fundraising activities and sponsorships. Develop new merchandise to increase event income.

Provide event insurance for activities surrounding festival.

Plan and execute advertising plan and public relations campaign in support of festival. Include regional and national niche promotion when possible.

Organize festival information/merchandise booths.

Explore forming independent committee for logistics of festival.

 

F. Core Area Trick or Treat October 31, 2007

 

1.

Assist Redwood Village Merchant’s Assoc. and Downtown Business Assoc. in marketing their merchant Trick or Treat nights.

G. Holiday Kids Movie Days - December

1.

Sponsor three weekend movie events for the children of Fortuna and the surrounding area.

 

2.

 

Distribute tickets through Fortuna business locations.

3.

Pending City approval, use "Rent Fund" to fund this promotion.

H. Citywide Christmas Events

1.

Promote and assist events that bring retail and service customers over the Christmas holidays. Including Redwood Village Open House, Downtown Open House, Electric Lighted Parade & Christmas Music Festival.

Provide liability insurance coverage for public decoration on Fortuna Boulevard and Main Street.

Provide overall public relations support for holiday events.

 

I. Fortuna Daffodil Show -March 22-23, 2008

1.

Assist Fortuna Garden Club in promoting and advertising the 32nd annual show

Coordinate school/business/show tie-in with art show.

J. Paddle to the Headwaters - April TBA, 2008

Assist organizers with regional and national promotion of event. Accomplish this through trade magazines, Internet marketing, local press and broadcast news, media sponsorships and paid advertising.

Assist new committee members in charge of merchandise and logistics, if needed. Staff serve on event committee to help with promotional duties and advise on former duties.

K. Farmer's Market

1.

Through public relations efforts use Farmers Market as a way of drawing attention to Fortuna's business community and drawing potential customers into Fortuna.

L. Art and Wine in the Park - June 8, 2008

1.

Aid organizers in promotion and advertising of event.

2.

Assist new Fortuna Rotary event chair in growing event in attendance, wineries and artists represented.

3.

Assist Organizers on site as requested.

 

M. New Events - As funding and resources allow assist new event committees with event development.

 

V. Programs and Promotions
A. Fortuna Gift Certificate

Administer Program, keep books on certificates, assist Umpqua Bank in filling large orders etc.

Promote Gift Certificates to the area employers as alternatives to cash or gift certificates to other shopping destinations.

Promote to the general public as an option for gifts to friends and family during November and December.

Fund reprint of certificates as needed.

Advertise certificates to Fortuna and Eel River Valley small employers as a perk for employees.

Send out point-of-purchase materials to educate businesses and potential consumers.

 

 


B. FBID Website

1.

Provide information to Fortuna business owners about FBID’s Workplan, meetings, programs and timely information.

2.

Provide information for new and relocating businesses about coming to Fortuna, contacts for available commercial property and business development.

3.

Continue successful search engine marketing of “FortunaBusiness.com” aiming for relocating businesses and start-up entrepreneurs.

4.

Add categorized business database to site. Make available a public version of the database similar to the Goods and Services directory.

5.

Re-direct tourists and other visitors to the Chamber of Commerce web site.

6.

Develop method of connecting businesses with similar interests through forums on the FBIDOnline site.

C. Customer Appreciation Day

1.

Re-work the customer appreciation concept to re-start in September 2007. Consider making the retail/service promotion more self sustaining.

2.

Continue goal of promotional activities that can include all types of businesses in all areas of town.

D. Mural Program

1.

Evaluate re-starting program with help from Design Review Board.

2.

Set aside grant funding to be awarded to business and property owners wanting murals on their buildings.

E. Goods and Services Guide

1.

 

Develop online database of Fortuna businesses categorized by service, specialty or product. Make available through the FortunaBusiness.com website.

Consider publishing printed version of guide.

F. Core Areas

1.

 

Assist members of the two FBID "Core Areas," the Downtown and Redwood Village merchant associations, in their promotional activities and committee work.

2.

 

Provide insurance coverage for promotional activities in core areas.

G. Member Benefits Miscellaneous

1.

Continue to make the FBID’s Bulk Mailing privileges available to all Fortuna businesses.

2.

 

Develop new “Member Benefits” that will impact the majority of FBID member businesses.

H. Classes and Seminars

1.

Produce at least one series of public relations or marketing seminars/discussion groups for Fortuna businesses.

Continue relationship with NC Small Business Development Center in developing seminar series

3.

Develop and produce the Fortuna BOSS seminar set with Richard Burroughs PhD. Monthly series would require 12 regular participants minimum. Fortuna BOSS would provide more in-depth business coaching for business owners and managers; personal follow-up and goal setting with Burroughs.

I. Customer Surveys

1.

Continue using community events as a place to sample local shoppers on buying habits and demographic information.

2.

See “Grant” item for PG&E grant that will have a customer survey component.


VI. Other Funding Sources


A. Grants

 

Complete PG & E grant-funded business recruitment and retention study with partner Fortuna Chamber of Commerce. Goal of study is to identify target businesses for recruitment and map strategy for retaining businesses.
