Fortuna California is located in the heart of the Eel River Valley and the hub for Humboldt County. Located just 20 miles north of the Avenue of the Giants, where some of the world’s largest Redwood Trees stand tall. Just 12 miles northwest of Fortuna is the glorious pacific ocean, right outside the Victorian Village of Ferndale. Fortuna is a safe, secluded small town located along the scenic Eel River and is the perfect place to stay, dine, shop, and explore.

Fortuna is conveniently nestled right next to Northern California’s world-famous redwood forests. These towering trees and the beautiful views they provide are just minutes away from our quaint town. Explore the Avenue of the Giants, check out the drive-thru tree, and visit some of California’s finest state parks.

HIKING

Rohner Park Trail is a 1.1 mile moderately trafficked loop trail near Fortuna, California, that is good for all skill levels. The trail is accessible year-round.  You can also take a stroll along the river. Fortuna Riverwalk trail begins on Sandy Prairie Road, just north of its intersection with Drake Hill Road, and heads north, passing by open fields and farmlands, and industrial areas. 

 

 Public access into the Headwaters Forest Reserve is provided from the north at Elk River Road, approximately six miles from Eureka, and limited access is provided from the south at Newburg Road in Fortuna. Limited public access to the south part of the Reserve is available May through Nov. 15, with wet weather restrictions. Reservations can be made at the Arcata Field Office starting May.

 

Just a 20-minute drive down Highway 101 to the Avenue of the Giants, the Drury-Chaney trail is the northernmost trailhead in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. It’s about two and a half miles from the northern end of the Avenue of the Giants, just past the sparse collection of houses known as Pepperwood.
